Alaska Railroad
The Alaska Railroad Corporation is a self-sustaining, full-service railroad serving ports and communities from the Gulf of Alaska to Fairbanks. Owned by the State of Alaska since 1985, the Railroad is overseen by a seven-member Board of Directors appointed by the Governor of Alaska. The Alaska Central Railway built the first railroad in Alaska starting in Seward and extending 50 miles north in 1903. On March 12, 1914, the U.S. Congress agrees to fund construction and operation of a railroad from Seward to Fairbanks at an estimated cost of $35 million. The line was completed in 1923. The branch line to Whitter began service in 1940 and currently uses the only shared car-rail tunnel in the United States to reach Whitter. Control of the railroad has shifted from the federal government to the State of Alaska. Currently, the Alaska Railroad operates 4 services during the summer and 2 during the winter.
