Istanbul has a very extensive transit network consisting of trams, subways, suburban railways, buses, funiculars and ferries that operate on both the European and Asian sides of the Bosphorus Strait. The primary public transit operator in Istanbul is Istanbul Elektrik Tramvay ve Tünel (IETT). The tram network is very extensive and one of the most heavily utilized parts of the transit system. There are five tram lines, including two historic tram lines, one on each side of the Bosphorus. Tram Line T1 carries 155,000 passengers each day.
Istanbul's first underground train line was the Tünel, a two stop funicular that opened in 1875. The Tünel is often thought of as being the smallest subway in the world. However, since Istanbul has other underground train lines, the claim of world's smallest subway goes to the Carmelit in Haifa, Israel. Istanbul has a more modern funicular that operates underground as well, connecting the T1 tram stop at Kabatas to Taksim Square.
Istanbul's subway lines are a mix of "light Metro" lines that operate with light rail vehicles and overhead catenary on exclusive rights-of-way and more traditional underground heavy rail trains. The bus system is very extensive, and the large fleet of over 2,700 buses has a fair amount of diversity to it.
Istanbul is served by Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Devlet Demiryollari, the Turkish national rail system, on both the European and Asian sides of the city. The mainline station at Sirkeci marks the eastern end of the entire European railway network, and was the terminal for the Orient Express service to Paris until May 19, 1971. TCDD also operates two suburban rail lines in the Istanbul area, one on each side of the Bosphorus.
