Glasgow Underground
The Glasgow Underground is the third oldest subway in the world, opening in 1896 (London and Budapest are the two older ones). The system was originally cable hauled, but was electrified in 1923. It remains fairly unchanged since then. There are 15 stations on a two track circle line, known as the inner rail and outer rail, and a depot at Bromlean Road (between Govan and Ibrox). The system was modernized in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Some stations were reconfigured to have two platforms, instead of a single, narrow, island platform. The platforms at most stations are only about 10 feet wide, and just fit a 3 car train (approximately 150 feet long). The trains are driven automatically although the doors are controled by human being. The trains can be operated manaully if need be.
