The Netherlands has one of the most comprehensive transit networks in the entire world. Many cities have extensive tram systems as their primary form of public transit with a variety of street cars operating on them, and Amsterdam and Rotterdam both have subway systems (though the tram system is more extensive in both cities). Additionally, there are almost 3000 kilometers of rail lines throughout the country, and nearly every town in the Netherlands has railway service. Practically every line sees a train at least once an hour, and there are at least four trains per hour connecting Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Eindhoven, the country's five largest cities.Due to the extensive coverage of the intracity tram systems and the intercity railway system, very few buses run in the Netherlands. Additionally, due to the country's small size, all public transit systems are part of the National Traiff System, which means that all fare media is valid in every Dutch city (though there are some services that are exempted, and this system is not valid for the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (Dutch Railways). The primary fare instrument for the National Tarrif System was the Strippenkaart. As of 2008, it is being phased out in favor of the OV-chipkaart smart card. Currently, OV-chipkaart is able to be used on all tram , bus, and Metro lines in both Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Beginning on January 29, 2009, strippenkaart will not be valid on the Rotterdam Metro. Rollout dates for the rest of the country have not been determined at the time of this writing (December 2008).
