The 2000 World Series was played between the New York Yankees and New York Mets. To commemorate the occasion, two NYC subway trains were wrapped for the event. Game 1 was played at Yankee Stadium so Mayor Guliani and other dignitaries boarded the specially wrapped Bombarier R142 with Yankee pinstripes on the ends and team logos on the side at Grand Central. The train, signed as "4 SUBWAY SERIES SPECIAL", went up to 161st Street/Yankee Stadium, delivering all the sports fans and railfans to see the game or take photos. The train ran the next night for game 2.
For game 3 at Shea Stadium, Corona Shop wrapped a train of WF R36 cars. (The third car from the Queens end was an WF R33, as on any 7 train. This car also recieved the wrap and had it when it was last sighted at 12:45 AM on June 18, 2001 at Grand Central.) Again, the dignitaries boarded and the train ran up the Flushing Express to Willets Point for the game, this time with Mets pinstripes on the ends. Both trains ran those runs to the stadiums until the conclusion of the series.
After the series, R62 1415 took part in the ticker-tape parade. Mayor Guliani proclaimed the trains would keep running to preserve the event. The Yankee train has lost its wrap but the Mets is still going strong but the consist has been broken up. Each of the 11 cars is still in service on the 7 and one can see the wrap still on the outside of the cars.
This page has photos of the Yankee R142 and Mets WF R36 on the night of the games, courtesy of Trevor Logan. On May 9, 2001, the webmaster saw two of the Mets cars as he was leaving his 7 train at Times Square. He has also spotted parts of the Corona World Series consist on the afternoon of June 17, 2001 and in the early morning hours of June 18, 2001 (on the way to and from a Subway Series game at Shea). Those photos are also included.
