Welcome to the City of Roses, Portland. Portland is often cited as one of the most livable cities in the world, partially due to its well run transit system. The system's official name is Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon, but it is more commonly known as TriMet. TriMet was founded in 1969 as a resolution to a dispute between the privately run and almost bankrupt Rose City Transit Corporation and the city government. Since then, TriMet has engaged in construction on the Downtown Transit Mall and the MAX Light Rail system, each of which has galvanized redevelopment in the areas around the service areas of those projects. MAX also operates the Portland Streetcar line, one of the first "modern" streetcar lines to ever be built in the United States. However, the streetcar line is managed by the Portland Streetcar Incorporated. Public transportation in Portland greatly benefits from progressive planning measures, such as bus only lanes on many streets in downtown, allowing buses to bypass traffic. Also, there is a large fare-free zone in downtown Portland called the Fareless Square, where any transit ride within the zone is free.

Additionally, CTran, the public transit system of Clark County, Washington, operates express commuter routes into downtown Portland.
