Like most other European countries, Spain has extensive public transit systems in many of its cities. Its largest city, Madrid, has one of the largest and most rapdily expanding subway systems in the world, as well as a bus network with over 200 routes and a fleet of over 2,000 buses. In 2007, Madrid opened three light rail (tram) lines to complement its Metro system. Barcelona also has a sizable Metro, a large bus system, several tram lines, and a several funiculars along the steep hills that surround the city. Smaller cities have buses, and a few also have small subway systems.

Spain also has one of the fastest growing high speed rail networks in the world. In 2008, Madrid and Barcelona were connected by a high speed line, cutting the travel time between these cities from over 6 hours to under 3 hours. High speed trains also run between Madrid and Sevilla, among other points.
