Switzerland is known for having prompt, efficient and reliable transportation. Many Swiss expect their trains and buses to arrive on time to the minute, and generally, that is what happens. Switzerland has many bus systems that operate on a proof-of-payment system that requires all passengers to buy tickets before boarding the bus in order to decrease dwell times, and bus stops are spaced fairly far apart to decrease journey times. The Swiss seem to detest the idea of constructing subways, but many larger cities have trams and trolleybuses that can move large numbers of people. Some cities have mega-articulated buses as part of their fleets. These buses are almost 75 feet (24 meters) long and have three sections connected by two articulated joints. The Swiss national rail system is also known for its efficiency. Because Switzerland is situated between France, Italy, and Germany, most of the high speed trains in Switzerland come from these other countries; Switzerland has no high speed train of its own. Switzerland owns three TGV sets that are used on TGV Lyria services, and the ICE operates on both Germany-Switzerland runs, and also some scheduled intra-Switzerland runs for scheduling purposes. Finally, overnight trains from Paris to Italy pass through Switzerland during the overnight hours, and due to the country's central location, many freight trains pass through the country at all hours of the day.
