The Toronto Transit Commission is one of the largest providers of public transportation in North America, operating a large network of subways, streetcars, and buses throughout the city of Toronto. It is possible to get between most points in the city with no more than two transfers at almost any time of day. The TTC serves 1.4 million passengers each weekday and over 440 million passengers each year. The subway system has 3 lines plus the Scarborough Rapid Transit line. There are a total of 69 stations on these four lines. The bus system has a fleet of 1,543 buses, 981 of which are wheelchair accessible, operating on 138 routes, the overwhelming majority of which feed outlying subway stations. There are also 11 streetcar lines, concentrated in the downtown area. Most subway stations have bus bays within fare control, making transfers between subway, streetcars, and buses easy. An additional benefit is that the rear doors can be used to board buses, which decreases dwell times.

In the York Region outside Toronto, public transit service is provided by York Region Transit. YRT also operates the Viva Bus Rapid Transit system, a highly successful BRT system that has 4 lines, one of which is likely to be converted to a TTC subway line (an extension of the Younge Street Line). Although Viva currently operates in mixed traffic for the entire length of each of its lines, there are plans to operate the busier parts of the systems in dedicated rights of way in the near future.
