MetroCard is a plastic farecard used to pay bus and subway fares. On July 4, 1998, it was replaced with MetroCard Gold, allowing free transfers between buses and subways. Shown are various types of MetroCards.

Blue MetroCard (original, no encoded transfers)

MetroCard Gold (free encoded transfers)

MetroCard Bus Transfer (free encoded bus to bus transfers, introduced simultaneously to MetroCard Gold, replaced paper bus transfers, issued upon request to non-MetroCard Gold bus passengers)

Single Ride MetroCard (same rules as a token, must be used within two hours of purchase (plus 18 minute grace period), bought only at MVMs)

Senior MetroCard (photo ID on rear, issued to Senior Citizens, only one person can pay on it, half fare, 7 minute "no use period" after initial swipe to prevent double fares)
MetroCard Bus
The MetroCard Bus goes around the 5 boroughs stopping at preselected places for people to purchase MetroCards, check their balances, and refil their cards.
